The Dos and Don’ts of Decluttering Your Home – Part 2

If you’ve ever woken up and felt like your home is full of stuff you don’t need it’s time to declutter. The idea of living an uncluttered life is becoming more appealing and many people are realising the benefits associated with living a life with less stuff.

While the idea of decluttering sounds appealing, many people feel overwhelmed and anxious when it comes to the execution. Decluttering your home doesn’t have to be as painful as you imagine, in this two-part post we look at six dos and don’ts for decluttering your home.

DO take an objective look at your things

Decluttering is about taking a practical look at your belongings and how you are, or are not, using them. Ask yourself questions like have you used said item(s) in the past year? Are you making use of the item right now? Are you saving an item because you think you might need it in future? How is the item adding value to your life and home? Is the item weighing you down and preventing you from doing the things you’d otherwise like to do?

DON’T aim for perfection, aim for practicality

You’re a real person living in a real home which means that even after you’ve decluttered your home and organised it the best way you could, it’s still not going to resemble something out of a storage catalogue.  You will ultimately be disappointed if perfection is your goal. The goal is to set up a space that works well for your needs. That is success.

DO keep it up

It’s important to realise that decluttering is an ongoing process. It’s not enough to simply declutter your home once and hope it stays that way. You need to maintain all your hard work with the new system you’ve devised to ensure that you don’t find yourself back to square one in a month’s time.
