9 Tips for Proper Pet Etiquette – Part 1

House hunting as a modern day pet owner has become quite challenging especially since more people are showing an interest in living in shared developments like, townhouse complexes, estates and apartments.

Living in a shared space means you need to be on top of your pet etiquette 24/7 especially if you and your furry friend want to live in harmony with those around you. In this three-part blog we’ll look at 9 tips for proper pet etiquette.

Know the rules

When you’re on the hunt for your next home, be sure to seek out pet friendly complexes and apartment blocks. The last thing you want to do is find your dream home and then have a stowaway pet. Make sure that you are absolutely certain of the rules with regard to the size and number of pets you are allowed to keep, and where they are allowed to be.

Keep it clean

We all get used to the way our homes smell, pet owners especially. With that said it’s important to remember, especially if you’re living in an apartment block, that not everyone appreciates the “earthy” smells that come with keeping certain pets. It Is your responsibility to keep your home clean and smelling fresh so that no unpleasant odours waft out into the common area or worse still your neighbour’s apartment.

Pick up after your pet

If you’re out with your pet in the common area and they make a mess, be sure to clean it up right away. It’s not fair on your neighbours or the communal garden service or maintenance staff to have to clean up after you or stumble across any unpleasant surprises while moving about the property. This is one of the biggest pet etiquette issues so make sure its high on your list of things to do.
