Hiring the wrong contractor can quickly suck the joy out of your home construction project and leave you feeling stressed out and in financial hot water. While the construction industry may be full of sub-standard and suspicious contractors there are more than enough reputable professionals to choose from.
In this three-part post we will share nine guidelines to help you separate the real from the fake and choose a professional contractor and ensure a good working relationship.
Do cost comparisons
Once you’ve started narrowing down the options it’s time to do cost comparisons. More expensive doesn’t always mean better while going for the cheapest option could see you forking out more money in the long run because your contractor budgets poorly or cuts corners.
Pick a contractor that specialises in your project type
While doing your research make sure you search for contractors who have a proven track record in your particular type of project. Good professional contractors research the kinds of projects they undertake, so they’re experts in their fields. This enables them to address potential problems and perform the work correctly.
Get references from recent projects
Once you’ve narrowed down your list even further be sure to get references from your potential contractors last three jobs before you sign any contracts. If possible, contact former clients and ask if they were happy with the work done and if you can see the finished product. You should also try and visit a current project to see how the contractor behaves onsite.
